We’ve seen a number of beastly abominations of robot creatures from Boston Dynamics over the years but its latest version is probably its most refined and least scary-looking to date.

Meet SpotMini, an electric-powered robot dog which looks more like a cross between a golden retriever and Bumblebee.

It’s the latest offering from Boston Dynamics – which previously brought us Atlas, Bigdog and Wildcat – since Google sold it to Softbank in June for an “undisclosed fee”.

On the company’s website, what appears to be an earlier version of SpotMini is featured, with a robotic head attached to its body, describing it as a “nimble robot that handles objects, climbs stairs, and will operate in offices, homes and outdoors.”

Sounds pretty much like the family dog, doesn’t it?

Smarter than your average dog.
Boston Dynamics

Boston Dynamics posted a 24-second trailer on YouTube on Nov 13 showing the new SpotMini bouncing away on all fours outdoors before stopping to look down at the camera for a moment before scampering off behind a wall.

The clip simply ends with the caption “Coming Soon”, like an epic blockbuster about to unleashed on humanity. Keep your eyes peeled.
