UPNM-TLDM STUDENTS HELP RAISE AWARENESS ON BIODIVERSITY

About 83 Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) and (Tentera Laut Diraja Malaysia) logistic students participated in the UPNM-TLDM Student Development Program: Environmental Sustainability through Community Service at the Lekir Forest Reserve in Lumut, Perak recently.

About 83 Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) and (Tentera Laut Diraja Malaysia) logistic students participated in the UPNM-TLDM Student Development Program: Environmental Sustainability through Community Service at the Lekir Forest Reserve in Lumut, Perak recently.

“Therefore, it is the voluntary of everyone to play a part to conserve and protect our priceless natural resources,” (Associate Professor Dr. Jessica Ong Hai Liaw, Deputy Dean Administration and Students AffairFaculty of Defence Studies and Management)

The event organised by the University’s Defence Studies and Management Faculty Corporate Social Responsibility Club in collaboration with The Chartered Institute Logistics and Transport Malaysia (CILTM), National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Virgo Teluk Batik Hotel on 26 Feb 2019.The objectives are to help raise awareness among students on the importance of mangrove and preserve 100 hectares of degraded mangrove forest in the area.

“Mangrove forests in Malaysia not only benefit the local community and support livelihood of those living in the area but also help preserve the ecosystem.

UPNM students also helped plant about 300 mangrove saplings (Rhizophora Apiculata) in degraded areas and the opportunity to experience hands-on mangrove planting.

Dr. Ong said participants also learned about the importance of the mangrove forest ecosystem to surrounding areas and its link to issues such as climate change, biodiversity and sustainable development.

“Many of people are unaware the key role of mangrove forests. They may support biodiversity and control the climate change for both social and economy through this event,” (Sofiaa Hazren, 19, UPNM student)

The human activities can cause degradation towards the mangrove forest reserve if the influence of conservation value. The awareness on conservation of these precious mangrove can benefits to community as a whole.
